Zebus

ZEBUS – Foundation Pure

After raising registered polled Herefords years ago, both of us suffered unintentionally broken bones just due to their sheer size. Now in our senior years, we decided it was time to switch to something more manageable.

Zebus are the only naturally occurring miniature breed of cattle. All the others are “man-made” and sometimes come with problems. Zebus are a breed of about 5000 years old and from India. Because they have been around for so long, they have become very hardy and easy to maintain with many assets. We have established a small herd of Zebu cows and a couple of nice bulls. We love all the advantages of raising Zebus, such as:

  • Although we have over sixteen acres, you can keep a pair of Zebus on less than two acres, possibly qualifying for an agricultural exemption, which could save you a lot of property taxes.
  • They are easy to maintain. We have no issues with our Zebus rubbing on our fences or tearing them up.
  • They are extremely hardy and resistant to disease and parasites.
  • If you have good pasture, your animals do not require grain or supplements. They are good foragers. We only bring in bales during the winter months, and we provide minerals year-round.
  • They love the sun and the heat. When the other animals seek shade in their pastures, the Zebus lie in the middle of their pastures, sunbathing.
  • They are very friendly. All of them come in for cookies whenever they see us. They love getting lots of petting and scratches. If we are working in their pasture, they follow us around like puppy dogs.

We also love their size. All of ours range from 32”- 38”. It is like having some really big dogs.

Our Cows all range from 32” to 38”
